The Belly of an Architect (1987)

In honor of Dubuque Main Street's Architecture Days, Carnegie-Stout Public Library in Dubuque will show the movie "The Belly of an Architect on Thursday April 21st @ 6PM in the Aigler Auditorium on the 3rd Floor. Admission and snacks are free and friendly discussion will be encouraged after the show.

Written and directed by Peter Greenway and starring Brian Dennehy, the movie is a drama about an American architect who travels to Rome to set up an exhibition honoring a French architect of the 1800s, where he increasingly becomes obsessed with his wife's adultery and his own failing health. The movie is 2 hours long and is rated R.

Marx Brothers Double Feature

Carnegie-Stout Library will present a Marx Brothers double feature with Horse Feathers and Duck Soup this Thursday November 18th @ 6PM. Featuring Grocho as a college president who can't keep his student body in line, Horse Feathers (1932) is an "anarchic parody of the highest education" with a frenzied footbal finale involving chariots, hot dogs, banana skins, elastic bands, and coutless footballs.

Duck Soup (1933), considered to be the Marx Brothers' "purest and most insane film," is a "pointed political satire" which spoofs everything from war to 1930's musicals.
Both films are in black and white and are about one hour long each and not rated.

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (A Match Made by God)

The Dubuque Film Society is happy to announce the Carnegie-Stout Public Library's upcoming showing of the Bollywood blockbuster of"Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi". Directed by Aditya Chopra, Shahrukh Khan stars in the film as mild-mannered office worker Surinder "Suri" Sahni whose love for beautiful, vivacious Tania "Taani Partner" Gupta (Anushka Sharma) transforms him into the loud and fun-loving "Raj". The film was released in December 2008 and is the third highest grossing Bollywood film of all time. This should be great fun and not to be missed!

The Cove (2009)

Dubuque Film Society is excited to announce Carnegie-Stout Public Library's presentation of "The Cove". Dubuque native Louie Psihoyos directs this Oscar-winning documentary that covertly films fisherman at in Taiji, Japan who were hunting dolphins. Former dolphin trainer Ric O'Barry has come to set things right after a long search for redemption. This is a film not to be missed as it combines investigative journalism, eco-adventure, and arresting imagery that adds up to an urgent plea for hope.

Carnegie-Stout presents Troubled Water (2008)

Directed by Erik Poppes, "Troubled Water" is a Norwegian drama about a man who becomes a church organist after serving time in prison, and a distraught mother who recognizes the organist as her child's killer.
The film is two hours long and is in Norwegian with English subtitles.

Chicago Short Film Brigade (2010)

Another installment of the Chicago Short Film Brigade is being presented as part of the annual Voices Art Shows' monthly events. Getting permission from the creators, CSFB scans the internet for great short films and travels around presenting the collection. They have been to Dubuque on a number of occasions and are always invited back to the annual Voices Show in September. As film enthusiasts, we feel very fortunate to have this opportunity! Please join us for an interesting night of film watching!

Registration and submission forms for Get Reel: Dubuque Student Film Competition & Festival 2007 are now available. ~~The registration deadline is March 31, 2007.~~ The film submissions are due by March 31, 2007. The pre-registration form should be submitted as soon as any participating students begin to work on their films. For more info, see http://www.curiouscity.com/

Get Reel is open to current students at any of the four high schools in Dubuque: Senior, Hempstead, Central, or Wahlert. Grand Prize is $1,000.

All films will be screened at a "red carpet awards ceremony" at Star Cinema on April 15, 2007, and will also be aired on one of Mediacom's public access channels.

Chicago Short Film Brigade

The new Chicago Short Film Brigade season starts in January. The Film Brigade hosted a screening at the Voices From the Warehouse District last October, so hopefully they will return to Dubuque in early 2007. Watch their site for updates!

Movie "The Killing" at Carnegie-Stout Public Library

The Dubuque Film Society will show the movie The Killing at the Carnegie-Stout Public Library on Thursday, August 31 at 6:00 p.m. The movie will be shown in the 3rd Floor Auditorium. Admission and snacks are free and discussion is encouraged.

A 1956 movie directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Sterling Hayden and Coleen Gray, The Killing is a crime noir classic about small-time crooks who plan a daring race-track heist. This movie is black & white, 1 hour and 29 minutes long and is not rated.

Coming this August, Netflix, the "world's largest online DVD movie rental service," will host a free screening of the 1989 movie Field of Dreams in Dyersville, Iowa, about 27 miles west of Dubuque.

Great idea, but next summer we hope to see Take This Job and Shove It at the Dubuque Star Brewery.

The Dubuque Film Society will show the movie "IL POSTINO (The Postman)" at Carnegie-Stout Public Library on Thursday, June 29 at 6:00 p.m. The movie will be shown in the 3rd Floor Auditorium. Admission and snacks are free, and discussion is encouraged.

A 1994 movie directed by Michael Radford and starring Philippe Noiret and Massimo Troisi, "IL POSTINO (The Postman)" is a romantic comedy about a bumbling mailman who asks a world-famous poet for help in winning the heart of the most beautiful woman in town. This movie is in Italian with English subtitles, is 108 minutes long, and is rated PG.
